Land Stewardship Paid Internship
About the Organization
Nearby Nature Milwaukee is an environmental justice and equity initiative started in the Fall of 2017 with a grant from the Sierra Club Foundation to build healthier and more resilient communities. From 2019 through 2023. Starting in July 2023, Nearby Nature is a fully tax-deductible 501c3 organization. Recognizing a great need in neighborhoods stressed by high poverty and injustice, the group focuses on Milwaukee’s 30th Street Corridor and Lincoln Creek Greenway through its four pillars: Building Community, Outings and Stewardship, Youth Education, and Addressing Racism.
About the Youth Program
Nearby Nature’s program covers a wide range of topics relating to land stewardship in an urban watershed. Besides basic native and invasive plant work, interns also work on a wildlife habitat study. Interns also get involved in community engagement activities, as well as green career exploration and networking. Roughly 50% of the intern’s work is direct land restoration work. They are also paid to attend relevant community and professional events. The internship includes recreational experiences such as paddling and leading interpretive nature hikes.
